Hiring plumbers, electricians and gas engineers: what to check
Gas, electrics and plumbing are the parts of a refurbishment where mistakes can be dangerous. A few quick checks protect you.
Gas
By law, anyone working on gas appliances or pipework in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their ID card and check the specific types of work it covers.
Electrics
Much domestic electrical work in England must meet building regulations. Electricians registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify their work. Make sure you get the certificate at the end.
Everything else
- Get the quote in writing, with what's included and excluded.
- Agree payments linked to finished work.
- Ask about insurance and any guarantee, and get them in writing.
